Flowers of the Forest, or The Flooers o the Forest, is a Scottish folk tune commemorating the defeat of the Scottish army of James IV at the Battle of Flodden in September 1513. Although the original words are unknown, the melody was recorded c. 1615–1625 in the John Skene of Halyards Manuscript as "Flowres of the Forrest", although it might have been composed earlier.

. . many renditions are played on the Great Highland bagpipe. Due to the content of the lyrics and the reverence for the tune, it is one of the few tunes that many pipers will perform in public only at funerals or memorial services, with play otherwise limited to private practice or to instruct other pipers. more

Hovering around 8O, it needs to be said that playing a medley of WW Army songs is now too much of a challenge for me. On 15 August a few WW tunes were played as a "serial medley" i.e. one at a time.

The final tune is "Going Home" and everyone is invited to hum. I have played it at a huge cemetery in France and 2000 people hummed. A truly memorable occasion. Although fewer people may attend on the 15th, participation is the key to building your own memory and commemoration.

Flowers of the Forest short version
I've heard them liltin'
At the ewe milkin'
Lassies are liltin'
Before dawn o' day
Now there's a moanin'
On ilka green loanin'
The Flow'rs o' the Forest
Are a' wede away
We'll hae nae mair liltin'
At the ewe milkin'
Women an' bairns
Are heartless an' wae
Sighin' an' moanin'
On ilka green loanin'
The Flow'rs o' the Forest
Are a' wede away
