The Heights of Dargai
Dargai Heights - northwestern Pakistan - 1897
An attack on the Dargai Heights resulted in the award of four Victoria Crosses. The Heights were held by tribesmen (from present day Afghanistan) but were successfully stormed by the Gordon Highlanders and the Gurkhas on 20 October 1897. Piper George Findlater (shown piping in the coloured print) and three other soldiers were VC recipients. The action was commemorated by the pipe march The Heights of Dargai. Hear the tune.
Allen George Findlater was born near Aberdeenshire in 1872. He joined the Gordon Highlanders in 1888 where he served in Belfast and Ceylon. He became disabled from the wounds sustained in Dargai and was repatriated to England. He was awarded the Victoria Cross in 1898 by Queen Victoria herself for the heroism and courage he displayed during the battle.
